There is a fair amount of discussion going around about the "boringness" of F1 at the moment. Of course very little has been said that we're only into the 2nd GP of the year - the reaction from Bahrain has been immense.
There are calls for changes to qualifying etc, etc, calls to change the aerodynamics. The reaction of course is at the moment an over reaction, 1 race in and everyone is bored? The problem has been the build up of expectation which just hasn't lived up to the hype. It will improve but we're being robbed of a classic season, I'm sure of it.
However, having just watched the Australian P3 and qualy on the telly I have been left elated, the sessions were exciting and full of action, the cars looked good and there was a bit of drama here and there.
BUT.
F1 is a driver orientated sport, sure the cars need to be good but not as good as they are.
I race karts. The rules for chassis are pretty flexible. The regulations require that the front and rear tracks do not go over a certain dimension. Materials are limited. Designers can play with tube angles, thickness's etc. The formula works pretty well. Engines? Well there are currently 4-5 engines homologated for my class and last weekend at Newcastle the top four in the class had one each of four of these engines. The rest is left up to the driver. tyre's are critical and are the biggest differentiator between competitors. Those at the back tend not to spend that much money on tyre's but when you start getting closer to the front the tyre spend goes up....It's cheaper than F1 but not by much when you consider the income....
2011. A quick look into the Werth set of F1 regulations. Aero. No appendages from the bodywork more than 5mm. Diffusers and under car aerodynamics totally and utterly banned. From the front edge of the front wheel to the back edge of the rear wheel the underside of the car is to be totally flat.
Front wings. They are too wide and ugly. Reduced front wing width, open design but only three planes in any 3D dimension excluding the end plate. The current F1 regs require that everyone has the same front wing in the middle part. Ridiculous.
Rear wings: The same as the front, obviously to smaller width's etc.
Engines: 1.5L turbo's again. Only one turbo.
Tyre's: I don't know, tyre's are the biggest performance enhancer in any form of motor sport. I am all for one brand of tyre because it will be so easy for a team to romp away with the title because of better tyre's. Maybe 3 compounds per weekend? No compulsory stops but also no refueling. Economy must be achieved. All compounds must be used. You don't have to start the race with your qualy set.
All the cars we drive these days are far better quality than what we drove 10-20 years ago. The same is with motor sport. Everything is better made, better quality, it's a fact so is the F1 car. My racing kart is so much better than the one from 15 years ago it's not funny. It handles beautifully and reacts to set up change of something as small as 3mm on the rear axle. It is sensational. The point I am struggling to make is that progress has been made in all walks of life and F1 drivers are driving far better machines than the hero's of yesteryear, everything is relative.
I am also a photographer. I never really got the chance to play in a dark room. I don't care, I really like Photoshop and digital.
I'm still struggling to make my point or get where I want to be. It's the tool, the F1 car of the future is not the car they are driving now, the engine to be serious while stupendously advanced is archaic. Driven by fossil fuels. F1 needs to step up and be brave and pioneer something new, loosen the restrictions on the rules let them play, it could in a very short time become awesome. Say by 2015 you will not be allowed that 1.5L turbo anymore.
Remember when Renault introduced the turbo to F1? Nearly every car manufacturer produced their own road cars with turbo's, it became a byword for performance. |
The State of F1 - Has everybody lost it after only GP? Melbourne should answer at least a couple of questions, no? |
